| Fire Prevention Week is this week, the theme this year is "Have 2 Ways Out!"
Fire Prevention Week was started to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire which started on October 8, 1871. The fire was rumored to have been started by Mrs. O'Leary's cow. The fire did the most damage on October 9; in all more than 250 people died, 100,000 were left homeless, 17,400 structures were destroyed, and more than 2,000 acres were burned.
The largest fire that same week was the Preshtigo Fire, it was the most devistating forest fire in American History.
On the 40th anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire, the Fire Marshals Association of North America decided to use the anniversary as a way to keep the public informed about the importance of prevention. According to the Records Administration Library Information Center and the National Archives, this is the longest running public health and safety observance on record.
